What is an eSIM
An eSIM (Embedded SIM) is a built-in SIM card chip integrated into a device. It is a digital, non-removable, programmable chip that allows data plans or phone numbers (eSIM profiles) to be configured via software.
eSIMs are widely used in smartphones, routers, wearable devices, tablets, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
Traditional SIM
It comes with a pre-configured operator profile that cannot be altered or removed.
eSIM
The eSIM chip can store multiple operator profiles, allowing users to choose or switch profiles to activate. This enables users to easily switch carriers or change services without the need to insert or replace a physical card.
GL.iNet offers both eSIM chip cards and physical eSIM cards, featuring identical product configurations and usage methods.
To streamline the production process and address the complexities of chip soldering in routers, GL.iNet has developed a plug-and-play physical eSIM card.
This solution is ideal for initial sampling or small batch shipments. For bulk orders or specialized industrial applications, the eSIM chip card can be seamlessly integrated during production.
What's the difference between a Traditional SIM and an eSIM (chip/physical card)?
Traditional SIM | eSIM Shop Now | |
---|---|---|
Form Factor | A physical SIM is a small, removable card that must be inserted into a dedicated SIM card slot in your device. | An eSIM is an embedded chip within the device, not removable or interchangeable physically. |
Storage Capacity | Typically stores a single carrier profile and limited phone book entries. | Can store multiple carrier profiles, allowing users to switch between different carriers and plans easily. |
Installation | Users need to manually insert or remove the SIM card to switch carriers or phone numbers. | Users can download and activate multiple carrier profiles digitally through Over-The-Air (OTA) updates. |
Switching | Traditional SIM cards can be lost, damaged, or stolen. | Switching carriers or phone numbers can be done seamlessly through the device's settings without needing to replace a physical card. |
Availability | Widely available and supported by virtually all mobile devices. | Increasingly supported by modern smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, and IoT devices, but not yet universal. |

Easy and Flexible Profile Management
GL.iNet offers intuitive profile management programs that enable editing (adding/deleting/enabling) profiles stored on the card. With the capacity to store multiple profiles, users can easily switch between operators and countries, ensuring smooth and adaptable connectivity worldwide.
Global Compatibility and Secure Online Purchase
GL.iNet's eSIM solutions are compatible with profiles from most eSIM stores worldwide. Users can purchase eSIM profiles online without providing personal information, significantly reducing the risk of privacy leakage and enhancing security.
Initial Free Data and Seed Profile Presets
GL.iNet's seed profile includes free data (1GB for US/EU and 100MB Global), providing easy initialization and basic testing for the device.
eSIM Scenarios
eSIM offers unmatched convenience and flexibility for travelers and business professionals. It streamlines communication during international trips, significantly reducing roaming costs and ensuring you stay connected wherever you go. Users can effortlessly switch between network carriers while traveling through different countries, enjoying fast and affordable network services.
For business trips, eSIM eliminates the need to swap SIM cards, avoiding any disruption to your connectivity. Most eSIM providers offer global network coverage, ensuring stable mobile connections worldwide. Whether you're handling urgent emails, attending video conferences, or using a corporate VPN, eSIM ensures you stay connected without limitations.
Anonymous Data Plan Purchase
Users can anonymously purchase eSIM data plans through online stores, reducing the need to provide personal information during the SIM card purchase process. This minimizes the risk of unnecessary personal data exposure, especially beneficial for short-term use or travel when users prefer to keep their personal details private.
Multiple eSIM Profiles
Users can store multiple eSIM profiles (data plans) within a single eSIM card and switch between them periodically based on their needs. This prevents long-term tracking by carrier base stations on a specific plan, enhancing privacy and reducing the risk of being monitored over extended periods.
eSIM technology is widely used in industrial applications like remote device management, asset tracking, smart manufacturing, and energy management. It offers global network coverage and remote configuration, allowing devices to switch networks seamlessly and enabling real-time monitoring, data transfer, and remote diagnostics. This reduces reliance on traditional SIM cards and simplifies equipment deployment and maintenance while enhancing data security.
The durable, embedded design of eSIM is ideal for harsh environments such as mining and oil exploration, improving efficiency and reliability. eSIM also adapts quickly to changing network needs, helping businesses meet the challenges of global operations effectively.
