While most Wi-Fi routers can be used as an access point by turning DHCP off and wiring its WAN port to a LAN port on your primary router ...some routers are even easier to extend your Wi-Fi with...like GL.iNet's travel routers, which run OpenWrt and can turn into a Wi-Fi repeater either by plugging in a cable to the WAN port, or wirelessly by connecting it to your primary Wi-Fi.
Overall, I just think this little box is neat. Sure, I can cobble together something faster and with better features. What I cannot do is make that for under $150 and also make it sleek with a status display screen and a compact chassis, especially if I account for my time. The reason I will pick one of these up is just to have it in my suitcase for when I might need it.
The GL.iNet Slate 7 is precisely what I wanted on paper for a travel router, and it still has the potential to be something great. This travel router beautifully blends speed, security, and compact simplicity all in one device. It has dual 2.5GbE ports, a built-in VPN, a touchscreen for ease of navigating the onboard UI, and it is all easily powered by USB-C while barely pulling any power.
