OpenRoaming: How It Works and Why It Matters for Frequent Travelers
In today’s blog, we will be taking a closer look at OpenRoaming, specifically exploring what it is and how it can benefit frequent travelers.
What is OpenRoaming?
OpenRoaming, initially launched by Cisco and now managed by the Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA), aims to create a global wireless ecosystem where Wi-Fi is both more accessible and secure. It envisions a world where connecting to Wi-Fi is as simple as turning on your device, eliminating the need for manual configuration, password hunting, or complicated logins.
Automatic Wi-Fi Connection
OpenRoaming is a cloud-based federation of interoperable Wi-Fi networks. This means it brings together a vast pool of Wi-Fi hotspots across the globe, creating a seamless network that allows devices to connect automatically.
Identity Management
Each OpenRoaming user has a unique identity, ensuring secure access to the right servers at the right time. It is a Passpoint-based roaming system that unites Identity Providers (IDPs) and Access Network Providers (ANPs) into a global “open roaming federation.” This federation currently boasts over 3 million Wi-Fi hotspots, a number that continues to grow.
Importantly, the term “provider” in IDP and ANP goes beyond the traditional meaning of a Communications Service Provider (CSP). For example, an ANP could be a hotel or a shopping mall, while an IDP could be a mobile phone manufacturer or a social network. This allows for unprecedented collaboration, enabling a mobile operator, for instance, to seamlessly roam with an enterprise like a shopping mall. This groundbreaking approach opens up new possibilities for secure and effortless Wi-Fi access across diverse environments.
How is it beneficial for frequent travelers ?
OpenRoaming offers a range of benefits for those who travel frequently:
- No More Password Headaches: Forget about hunting down Wi-Fi passwords or struggling with complicated logins. OpenRoaming automatically connects you to secure networks, eliminating the hassle of manual configuration.
- Secure Internet Access: Utilizing interconnection protocols based on WBA public key infrastructure, OpenRoaming guarantees secure connections across its network for all users. At the same time, it prioritizes privacy protection and safeguarding user data, adhering to strict PII (Personally Identifiable Information) policies.
- Quality of Service: OpenRoaming provides a baseline level of network availability and speed, with advanced tiers available for users requiring higher performance.
- Worldwide Access: OpenRoaming is expanding rapidly, providing access to a growing network of hotspots across the globe. This means you can stay connected even in unfamiliar destinations.
