How One GL.iNet Remote KVM Fixed a “Dead” PC in an Hour

How One GL.iNet Remote KVM Fixed a “Dead” PC in an Hour

The Situation: Power Surge, Old Hardware, No One On-Site

One Tuesday, a power surge scrambled multiple PCs at the home of a user’s parents, both in their 90s, about 100 miles from the user. On Wednesday, they ordered the Comet (GL-RM1) from Amazon; same-day delivery brought it straight to the house.

Thursday morning, they guided their father through connecting the device to the “broken” PC. After some setting up, they were able to dive straight into BIOS on the target PC.

The Breakthrough: BIOS-Level Access Revealed the Real Culprit

From the Comet console, the user investigated BIOS settings. Diagnosis: a classic boot puzzle on a multi-drive system.

  • The PC had three hard drives.
  • Windows lived on Disk 2; boot files were on Disk 0.
  • After the power event, BIOS reset the boot order to the default 0,1,2.
  • This system required 0,2,1 to boot properly.

After a few retries and reboots, they restored the correct disk order and the PC sprang back to life.

That’s the power of a true remote KVM: even when the OS won’t load, you can work at BIOS level, as if you’re physically at the keyboard and monitor.

Results: Fixed in ~1 Hour, Zero Driving

From unboxing to resolution took about an hour-and avoided 200 miles of driving (possibly 400 if the PC had to be hauled home). The verdict from the user: “Very happy with my purchase.”

Why GL.iNet KVM Shines in Moments Like This

  • BIOS / Pre-Boot Control
Diagnose boot issues, firmware settings, and disk order even when the OS won’t start.
  • Browser-Based, Cross-Platform Access
Diagnose boot issues, firmware settings, and disk order even when the OS won’t start.
  • Remote Power & Reboot Workflow
Manage restarts and recovery screens like you’re on-site.
  • Great With Older Machines
Works with legacy desktops, just pair the right cables.
  • Less Cables
While Comet (GL-RM1) still requires a power cable, Comet PoE (GL-RM1PE) uses LAN cables for power, simplying cable management.
